Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may sell four players after Roma tie is done

Manchester United’s Europa League match with Roma could be the last chance saloon for four players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. The Red Devils could sell some big names this summer to free up funds amid rumours linking the club with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland, Declan Rice and Raphael Varane. Express Sport looks at the quartet who are fighting for their futures ahead of the match at the Stadio Olimpico.

David De Gea

United have had David De Gea on their books ever since 2011.

But, although he’s been one of the best signings in the club’s history, he’s fallen down Solskjaer’s pecking order since the birth of his daughter in February.

The Spain international is currently behind Dean Henderson, who looks set to keep his place between the sticks for the foreseeable future.

United can’t allow De Gea, as their highest-earner on £375,000-a-week, to warm the bench.

So this could be one of his last appearances if, as expected, he starts the showdown.

Axel Tuanzebe

It’s been a difficult season for Axel Tuanzebe, with injury limiting the 23-year-old to just six Premier League appearances.

The Red Devils recently tied Eric Bailly down to a new contract, which will only increase his battle for opportunities.

And with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire both first-choice under Solskjaer, and Varane potentially arriving this summer, Tuanzebe could be sold.

Aston Villa have been linked with the centre-back, having previously seen him shine for two years in the Midlands.

And United could be about to wave goodbye to their academy graduate at the end of the campaign.

Donny van de Beek

Back in the summer, United paid £40 million for the signing of Donny van de Beek.

And while the Netherlands international undoubtedly has class, he’s struggled to make an impact in the Premier League this term.

Van de Beek has been linked with Borussia Dortmund, with the Bundesliga giants open to snapping him up this term.

A big performance against Roma could convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer into keeping him.

However, given the fact he’ll struggle to oust Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in future, a parting of the ways could make sense for all parties involved.

Alex Telles

Another player to join United back in the summer was Alex Telles.

Yet, like Van de Beek, he’s spent the majority of his Old Trafford career stuck on the bench.

There’s been talk of a potential move to Italy, with both Juventus and Inter Milan emerging as suitors.

Telles is a good asset to have given his experience and attacking style of play but, unless he plays more, he may seek an exit.

And this summer could be the perfect time for him to chance his arm elsewhere.

Solskjaer speaks out

Speaking before the match against Roma, Solskjaer has defended the Glazers by claiming he has their backing.

Fans protested against the Americans on Sunday, forcing their Premier League match with Liverpool to be postponed.

And Solskjaer said: Sometimes frictions and challenges can move things forward. The last few weeks have been tough.

“I’ve had backing, I have to say. I’ve been put in charge and I’m responsible for the footballing matters, and I understand fans want to see trophies and progress.

“Hopefully we can get to a final tomorrow, that’s the short-term fix, then we’ll take it from there.”
