Over 50 people were killed and more than 100 people were injured in an airstrike that hit a market in Ethiopia’s northern village of Togoga Tuesday, a Trigray health official told the Associated Press.
A staffer with an international aid group told the AP he had spoken with a colleague and others at the scene. “It was horrific,” he said. “We don’t know if the jets were coming from Ethiopia or Eritrea. They are still looking for bodies by hand.”
This attack comes amid fighting in the Tigray region between Ethiopian forces and Tigray’s former leaders.
A health official, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation, said ambulances and medical workers were blocked from reaching Togoga by soldiers.
“We have been asking, but until now we didn’t get permission to go, so we don’t know how many people are dead,” one of the doctors in the capital, Mekele, said.
