lot of issues went on in the life of celebrities that were hot gossip on social media this year. They generated a lot of heated arguments among Nigerians as people took sides ‘for or against’ a particular issue.

As 2019 is gradually coming to an end, VANESSA OKWARA takes a look at some of these issues that got Nigerians reacting on social media. Some of these topics were calls for justice and some were just for laughs.

Take a look at five of those topics that were simply hot gossip on Nigeria social media space this year

Fatoyinbo and Busola Dakolo

This year, wife of singer, Timi Dakolo, Busola, accused the senior pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, Biodun Fatoyinbo, of molesting her as a child. The accusation got many Nigerians sharing mixed reactions, some called for justice while others refused to believe the allegations, saying this happened a long time ago, that Busola does not have enough proof to accuse the man of God. They eventually went to court and Pastor Fatoyinbo was acquitted and Busola was asked to pay a fine. This also caused quite a stir on social media as lot of people felt the court ruled unjustly against a rape victim, Busola.

Regina Daniels and Ned Nwoko

Regina Daniels’ marriage to former politician, Ned Nwoko, trended online due to the fact that many could not come to terms with the fact that a beautiful girl like Regina, who is just 20 years old, could marry a 58 years old man. A lot of Nigerians congratulated her while others berated her and called her a gold digger. Regina seemed unbothered by all the trolls as she went ahead to keep posting luxury cars, houses exotic travels and jewellery she acquired from her new husband and this infuriated both her fans and foes the more as the buzz goes unabated.

BBNaija, Tacha and Mercy

Big Brother Naija was hot gossip in Nigeria from the first day it started, till the 99 days the reality show ended. It trended online consistently and practically took up all the gossip on social media as fans reacted to several things that went on in the Big Brother’s house.

Tacha and Mercy were both housemates in the 2019 edition of Big Brother Naija. While in the house, the two had an epic fight that got Tacha disqualified and got Nigerians talking about it for days on social media. Although, Mercy was declared winner of the show, it seems the feud is still going on as fans of both mercy and Tacha continue their battle for supremacy for their favourite star.

Rappers, MI Abaga and Vector’s feud

The long-standing beef between MI Abaga and Vector took a new turn this year. The rappers released ‘diss’ tracks against each other. Their beef left Nigerians entertained in a creative way. They kept releasing songs to reply each other’s insults and Nigerians simply loved it and basked in the euphoria of the rap and lyrics.

Naira Marley/ Simi clash and Naira Marley’s subsequent arrest by EFCC

Singer Simi had shared her thoughts on Yahoo boys and the effect they have on the country globally. The singer’s statement about Yahoo boys did not sit well with Naira Marley who said Yahoo boys also listen to her music.

Naira Marley has never been one to shy away from supporting the advanced fee fraud perpetrated by Nigerians. Despite the issues of misinformed identity as well as the effect on businesses and trust in Nigeria, Naira Marley is convinced that there is nothing wrong with it. Also, Naira Marley had taken to his Instagram handle to call out Simi for allegedly snubbing him at an event over his stance on cybercrime.  This generated a lot of hot arguments on social media where some celebrities came out to condemn Marley and others supported Simi.

As if that was not enough, this hot exchange of words between Marley and Simi, made EFFCC to turn their eagle eyes on Naira Marley’s activities and he was later picked up by The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission who linked them to cybercrime offence popularly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’.
