“The court’s decision reaffirms… party’s structures to choose its leaders.”

Following the Supreme Court judgment on Friday that parties, not courts, should determine their leadership, both Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman claimed validation of their roles in the Labour Party (LP). While the court overturned an earlier Appeal Court verdict recognising Abure, Usman hailed the ruling as a “victory for the rule of law.” She urged unity, saying, “The Labour Party remains one indivisible family, steadfast in its mission to create a New Nigeria.”
In contrast, the Abure-led faction insisted the ruling did not sack Abure, arguing it affirmed internal party structures. LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh said, “The court’s decision reaffirms the preceding and accumulated high courts and appeal court judgments that uphold the Labour Party’s structures to choose its leaders.”
The judgment has further stirred debate over party leadership, though both factions call for calm.
