Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi is set to host a polygamy conference on October 29, 2023.
The event, tagged ‘Beyond Polygamy: Women in Polygamy Conference’ will seek to demystify polygamy.
According to Halal Eventbrite which posted details of the event on its Instagram page, the event is only open to women and that there will be “no photos or video coverage”.
The organisers said the event is not only open to Muslim women but Christian women too.
According to Kenyan newspaper Citizen Digital, the event is to also help open up the unconventional family setup to more people willing to participate.
Lula Aginga, the coordinator of ‘Beyond Polygamy,’ was quoted as saying the event would also attract women to engage in a conversation that has long ‘been seen as a taboo.’
“This conference will attract women from all over East Africa, to engage in a conversation that has been seen as a taboo in modern society,” she said.
“It is a conference to help demystify polygamy that has left many women
stigmatized when their husbands marry or when they join a family as second or even third wives.”
Further, the organisers say the conference will help polygamous individuals discover new perspectives, connect with like-minded individuals, and have fun while at it.
“Polygamy is part of our rich human history and it is time we discussed it openly without fear of stigma,” one of the organisers said.
