President Tinubu Orders Reopening of Nigeria’s Borders with Niger
President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive for the reopening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger. Additionally, the president has instructed the lifting of other sanctions against the country, effective immediately.
Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, conveyed this directive in a statement, affirming, “This directive is in compliance with the decisions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.”
Following the coup that ousted Mohamed Bazoum as democratically elected president on July 26, 2023, Nigeria had imposed border closures against the landlocked West African nation.
The decision to reopen borders signifies a significant diplomatic move, aligning with regional decisions and fostering relations between Nigeria and Niger.
