When is Ramadan 2025? The Islamic calendar’s holy month of Ramadan will begin this year just hours after February’s new moon. However, this year, the timings coincide with a dramatic solar eclipse — the first of 2025 — blending the spiritual with the celestial.

When Ramadan 2025 Begins: The Ramadan Moon

Ramadan is part of the Islamic calendar, which is a lunar calendar. However, although the moon determines the end of one month and the beginning of anothern, they can’t be calculated in advance because they rely on sightings of the crescent moon immediately after the new moon.

So it could begin on Friday, Feb. 28 or Saturday, Mar. 1, depending on the sighting of a crescent moon soon after the new moon on Thursday, Feb. 28. It could even begin on Sunday, Mar. 2, 2025. It’s referred to as the Ramadan Moon because its sighting ends the Islamic month of Shaban and sees the beginning of the month of Ramadan.

When Ramadan 2025 Ends: The Shawwal Moon

It will finish with the breaking of the fast, known as Eid al-Fitr, on Saturday, Mar. 29 — just hours after the new moon — on Sunday, Mar. 30, or even Monday, Mar. 31.

The sighting of this crescent moon on one of these dates is called the Shawwal Moon. Its appearance ends Ramadan, the month of Shawwal, and the Eid al-Fitr festivities are started.
