Several UK charities cut ties with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, on Monday after reports surfaced of an email in which she called Jeffrey Epstein a “supreme friend.”

Julia’s House, a children’s hospice, said the correspondence made it “inappropriate” for Ferguson to remain a patron. A spokesman said Ferguson sent the email on lawyers’ advice after Epstein threatened legal action over comments she made in a 2011 interview.

The Sun reported that Ferguson had apologized to Epstein in writing, calling him a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend.” The Associated Press said it could not independently verify the email’s authenticity.

Other charities, including the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation and Prevent Breast Cancer, also ended their ties with Ferguson.

In 2011, she publicly admitted taking £15,000 from Epstein, calling it a “gigantic error of judgment.”
