Christine Grady, a top bioethicist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and wife of former NIH official Anthony Fauci, received a layoff notice on Tuesday as part of a post-pandemic restructuring of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
According to reports, Grady’s departure is aimed at consolidating administrative functions and overhauling the status quo in Americans’ health. Some NIH leaders were offered transfers to remote field offices, but it’s unclear if Grady was given this option.
Grady’s marriage to Fauci had raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, particularly regarding ethical questions that could reflect poorly on the former White House medical advisor. An NIH official described Grady as “a good person with a major conflict of interest.”
