Motorist accuses Lagos police of alleged N95,000 extortion

An X (formerly Twitter) user, @gbollie247, has accused the men of the Nigeria Police Force stationed at the Ketu Bridge in Lagos State of extorting him of the sum of N95,000.

 The incident was said to have happened in the Ketu road linking to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday afternoon.

 In a series of tweets shared on the micro-blogging platform on Tuesday and observed by our correspondent, the victim alleged that the officers stopped and searched his car, after which they forcefully collected his mobile phone.

 He claimed that the demand for money came after the officers were said to have checked his mobile phone and saw bank alerts.

He claimed that they demanded N1m but eventually settled for the sum of N95,000 before allowing him to proceed on his journey.

He tweeted, “Men at Ketu bridge connecting the Express just extorted N95,000 through the use of POS right now. They searched the car and snatched my phone and went through it, hence, demanding for (sic) a million naira because they saw bank alerts…

@gbollie247 further said the matter was reported to the nearest police station in Alapere and the Divisional Police Officer conducted a search on the checkpoint where the extortion had happened.

 Some officers on duty were also said to have been called in for questioning and identification in a bid to identify the policemen who had allegedly acted unprofessionally.

 “I have met with the DPO of the station and she was swift in visiting all the checkpoints along the route where the extortion was carried out. The Deputy PPRO of Lagos was also on the ground and they assured (me) of proper investigation. Officers on duty were brought out for identification,” the victim narrated…
