Tasmanian court sentences Nigerian man to four years in prison for $2 million drug operation

A Nigerian-born man, Ifeanyi Ani, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Supreme Court of Tasmania for his involvement in a drug operation worth over $2 million. Ani, 39, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, attempting to traffic in a controlled substance, and trafficking in a controlled substance.

The court heard that Ani, who was born and educated in Nigeria, entered into an agreement with an acquaintance in Hong Kong in early 2023 to provide Tasmanian addresses where drugs could be sent in exchange for money. Between February and May 2023, Ani arranged for packages containing methylamphetamine to be sent to his workmate and a female associate.

Australian Border Force intercepted five packages in New Zealand, Sydney, and Belgium during this period, with a total weight of just over 2 kilograms and a potential street value of up to around $2.1 million.
