SAHARA REPORTERS
The Human Trafficking and Smuggling Investigation Department of the Dominican Republic’s Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DICRIM) has arrested a Nigerian national, IK Egbor, wanted by Haitian authorities.
Egbor’s arrest came after he attempted to acquire a travel document under the pretence of having lost his identification.
However, migration records flagged him as having no legal entry into the Dominican Republic.
Authorities revealed that Egbor is implicated in a case linked to human trafficking and smuggling.
His extradition to Haiti is being processed in collaboration with Haitian authorities to face justice for the allegations against him.
Dominican Today reports that Haitian authorities confirmed Egbor’s escape from prison on March 3, 2024, during a mass breakout.
Egbor was previously arrested in 2022 at Toussaint Louverture International Airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs in his stomach while travelling to Paris.
After an international alert and a joint investigation with the General Directorate of Migration, authorities tracked him down and took him into custody.
He is set to be extradited to Haiti’s Bureau for the Fight Against Drug Trafficking (BLTS/DCPJ) to face legal proceedings.
