Andrew Neil Hopper, a UK vascular surgeon, has been jailed for 32 months after admitting he faked sepsis to claim £466,000 in insurance payouts.

A British vascular surgeon, Andrew Neil Hopper, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for faking sepsis to fraudulently claim over £466,000 in insurance payouts after self-amputating his legs for sexual gratification.

The 49-year-old doctor pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud by false representation and three counts of possessing extreme pornographic images, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

“Hopper has a sexual fetish linked to amputation, and paid to access these images for his own gratification,” Senior Crown Prosecutor Richard Parkhouse said.

Investigators revealed Hopper packed his legs in ice and dry ice before paramedics found him in 2019. He later claimed £235,622 and £231,031 from two insurers without disclosing the injuries were self-inflicted.

Hopper, who once appeared on BBC and ITV programs as a sepsis survivor, had also purchased dry ice online days before the incident.

Authorities confirmed his actions had no impact on patient care at Royal Cornwall Hospital.
