Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has called for the public parade of suspects linked to the killing of 16 hunters and urged compensation for the victims’ families. His demand came during a condolence visit by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo in Kano, following the mob lynching in Uromi, Edo State. Yusuf condemned the act as a violation of human dignity and emphasized that both Islamic and Christian teachings uphold the sanctity of life. He assured that measures were in place to prevent reprisals, stating, “We have implemented strong security measures to prevent any reprisal attacks. We also urge that those arrested be publicly paraded to bring relief to the victims’ families and to ensure accountability.” Governor Okpebholo, in turn, denounced the killings as “barbaric and unacceptable” and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, revealing that 14 suspects had been arrested and would be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.
Meanwhile, various leaders and organizations have condemned the killings and called for swift justice. Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the act as “senseless” and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law. The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria emphasized the need for better oversight of community policing structures to prevent such extrajudicial actions in the future. Similarly, the Esan Descendants Assembly Worldwide expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, distancing the broader Esan community from the perpetrators and condemning vigilante justice. Governor Okpebholo assured that President Bola Tinubu had directed security agencies to track down all those involved, stating, “We have implemented robust security measures to hold all those involved accountable.”
