Jurgen Klopp has expressed his surprise at Mohamed Salah’s lowly ranking in the Ballon d’Or voting – and questioned Lionel Messi claiming the honour.

Messi was named the winner for a record seventh time at a glittering ceremony in Paris on Monday night, beating Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski into second place.

Salah, meanwhile, was down in seventh spot despite being hailed in recent months as the best player in the world on current form having scored 17 times in 18 games for Liverpool this term, including several goal of the season contenders.

They are asked to determine their list based on three criteria: individual and collective team performance during the year, the talent and fair play of the player and the overall judgement of his career.

Salah mustered only 121 points compared to 613 for Messi. Chelsea midfielders Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Manchester United veteran Cristiano Ronaldo were also ahead of the Liverpool man in the list…
