Bruno Fernandes has explained how he and Cristiano Ronaldo broke a strict rule put in place at Manchester United by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the win over Arsenal.
The midfielder, who had scored the opening goal, allowed his Portugal international team-mate to take the spot-kick despite Solskjaer being adamant that he should continue himself.
The 27-year-old missed a last-gasp penalty against Aston Villa back in September which cost his side a valuable point – having been instructed not to give the ball to Ronaldo.
While under the guidance of Michael Carrick, there seems to have been new rules, with the 36-year-old forward stepping up and finishing with aplomb.
“We didn’t have a chat. I missed the last one so I trust him in the same way I trust myself,” Fernandes told BBC Sport after United ran out 3-2 winners.
“It was time for Cristiano to take the penalty because I took the last one and missed it. It doesn’t matter who gets on the penalty.”
While his former boss allowed players that missed to continuing taking penalties, the new rule seems to be that new players step up if the last one wasn’t scored…
