Thomas Tuchel blasts individual mistakes for Chelsea's defeat at West Ham

Chelsea lost their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 3-2 by London rivals West Ham, a defeat which Blues boss has blamed on individual errors.

Arthur Masuaku scored his first-ever Premier League goal in the 87th minute when his cross curled into the back of the net to land the spoils.

Tuchel’s side initially took the lead in the 29th minute when veteran defender Thiago Silva nodded home from a corner.

Manuel Lanzini then equalised from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after goalkeeper Mendy fouled Jarrow Bowen.

England international Mason Mount then put his boyhood club back in the lead on the cusp of halftime when he met Hakim Ziyech’s sweeping pass on the volley which beat Lukasz Fabianski at his near post.

Bowen then made it 2-2 when he curled a great effort past Mendy in the 56th minute before Masuaku sent the London Stadium into a frenzy.

Speaking to BT Sport after the defeat, Tuchel didn’t shy away from pointing the finger at his players for the result.

He said: “ I don’t think we did a bad match, it was an okay match. It’s tough to play here. We had too many individual mistakes, it was the same against Man Utd and Watford. We talked about it before and obviously, it didn’t help. That’s the story.

“Everybody is involved, the decision is not the best to pass the ball back. Decision making is not best from Edu (Edouard Mendy) in this moment.

West Ham’s first equaliser was very avoidable and Tuchel was, understandably, infuriated to concede due to the errors.

Jorginho’s back pass to Mendy was under-hit and put the Senegal international in a predicament, but on two separate occasions the goalkeeper tried to hold onto possession rather than clearing his lines.

Mendy, again, could also be blamed for the third Hammers goal considering he had a long time to watch the flight and curl of the ball before letting it in at his near post.
