Erling Haaland 'divorce' talk at Man City ramps up as Man Utd, Chelsea are implicated in £175m transfer plan

TEAM TALK

The possibility of Erling Haaland departing Manchester City after just one season continue to linger with fresh reports claiming a new suitor is planning a £175m offer for his services.

The Norwegian has been in the goals at City during his debut season in the Premier League. Indeed, his winner at Crystal Palace on Saturday means he has an astonishing 34 goals in 35 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Despite that, all does not appear well behind the scenes. There has been suggestions from pundits that Haaland might have signed for the wrong side in City given the way they have had to adapt their style. Led by Jamie Carragher, he argues that, despite the success of the Norwegian on a personal level, he does not make City a better side.

Adding to the uncertainty, Haaland has also been dogged by speculation that Guardiola never wanted to sign him in the first place. And while the City boss has moved to deny such claims, suggestions about Haaland and City ‘divorcing one another’ have gathered pace in recent weeks.

His deal at the Etihad Stadium, however, does not expire until summer 2027. And even if City did decide to sell, it would surely take a mammoth fee to prise him away from City.

The club perhaps most frequently linked with a move for Haaland are Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are long-term admirers of the 22-year-old and held talks over his signing when it was apparent he would be leaving Dortmund.

And while the move did not materialise at the time, their interest has never seemingly faded. Now with Karim Benzema nearing the end of the line at the Bernabeu, links to Haaland are gathering pace again.
