Ralf Rangnick’s first Manchester United signing is still awaiting his first-team debut, one year on from his arrival at the Premier League giants.

Despite having the entire January transfer window to strengthen his squad, Toby Collyer, 19, proved the only significant coup for the Austrian manager with the United hierarchy snubbing all five of his winter recommendations.

A highly-rated prospect at Brighton and Hove Albion, the teenager, who has captained England at Under-16 and Under-17 level, penned a three-year-deal in March 2022 and made three appearances for the Red Devils’ Under-18s side at the back end of the previous season.

Collyer stepped up to United’s Under-21 side this term, featuring in nine Premier League 2 matches so far in 2022/23 but is still yet to be handed a spot in the matchday squad by new manager Erik ten Hag.

A cool holding midfielder player, Collyer could be granted an opportunity following Casemiro’s four-match ban, the Brazilian given a second red card in just three matches for a horror tackle on Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s 0-0 draw.
