Joel Glazer’s favourite player heading for Man Utd exit amid takeover

At a time where Joel Glazer and the rest of the family are nearing a Manchester United exit, amid a potential takeover, his favourite player is expected to join him in heading out of the door. The American has long been a fan of Anthony Martial. However, with the France international plagued by injuries, a summer departure appears to be on the cards.

Back in 2020, The Evening Standard claimed Martial was a favourite player for Glazer, who had actually blocked him from leaving Manchester United earlier in his career.

Jose Mourinho had hoped to jettison the France international two years previously, with Ivan Perisic his dream replacement.

Yet Glazer blocked Martial from leaving, with the report even saying the American considered the striker to be the club’s very own version of Pele.

United landed the attacker back in the summer transfer window of 2015 believing they’d struck gold.

Martial was seen as the ideal replacement for the likes of Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie, who had both been shown the door.

And he immediately lived up to the hype, scoring a memorable solo goal on his debut against Liverpool before netting 16 more times in his maiden season at the club.

Martial blew hot and cold under Mourinho, struggling to cope with life under the Portuguese at times.

He was particularly unhappy in 2016 when he was stripped of his No 9 shirt, with that jersey given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic instead.

And Martial would regress under Mourinho, with the current Roma boss then losing his job in December 2018.

The 27-year-old did appear to have turned a corner in the 2019/2020 season when he scored 23 goals across all competitions under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But, since then, injuries and inconsistency has often prevented him from fulfilling his true potential.

Fast-forward to now, and it emerged earlier this year that United were planning on selling Martial.
