Chelsea owner Todd Boehly told to axe Frank Lampard in savage move

EXPRESS

Todd Boehly has been encouraged to get a new manager in “as soon as possible” after Chelsea tasted defeat once again under Frank Lampard. Adding further misery to their season, the Blues crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night, with a humbling 4-0 aggregate loss to holders Real Madrid.

Chelsea, beaten in three consecutive games following Lampard’s appointment as caretaker boss, started positively on the night, however, they failed to take their chances as the Los Blancos ran riot at Stamford Bridge. Following a rapid counter attack on the 58th minute, Rodrygo opened the scoring after tapping home from close range.

Effectively silencing Stamford Bridge, Federico Valverde then danced through Chelsea’s motionless defence on the 80-minute mark as Rodrygo added his second with yet another simple finish. Madrid’s superiority sees them set up a potential semi-final clash against Manchester City, who hold a 3-0 first-leg lead over Bayern Munich.

Question marks remain over Chelsea, though – winners of the Champions League in 2021 – who have dramatically fallen from grace since the Boehly takeover. Tuesday night’s defeat marked the first time Chelsea have lost four games in a row since 1993.

Speaking after the match on Sky Sports News, pundit Tim Sherwood, who analysed the game live, believes Chelsea should get a new manager in now.

He said: “I think they need to get a manager in as soon as possible. I think if they find a manager, they should bring a manager in so he gets an opportunity to look at the squad and what he’s got. They need a huge clear-out here, you know, someone who wants to fight for that shirt and give them a little bit of balance.

“I mean, they’re so disjointed, they’ve got so many players in offensive areas and wide players, all pretty similar of quality wise. Let a manager come in, see them train everyday and see them play in the remaining games that they’ve got. They’ve got tough games to come and then he can make his decision.”
