Tottenham have announced Heung-min Son as their new club captain.
Current skipper Hugo Lloris is ‘in negotiations’ with Lazio to leave on a free transfer despite having a year left on his deal.
Long-standing star and striker Harry Kane completed his move to Bayern Munich on Saturday morning, too.
Now, Spurs have confirmed their new leadership team with Ange Postecoglou naming the players he’ll be looking to to guide his side this season.
The report states Son will take the armband this season, with the winger already having plenty of experience as a captain thanks to his four years leading South Korea.
Summer signing James Maddison will be one of Son’s vice captains.
The midfielder wore the armband on many occasions when he stepped in at Leicester City.
The other assistant will be defender Cristian Romero, who first arrived at Spurs on loan in 2021 before signing permanently last summer.
The trio are said to be seen as ‘good characters’ that will bring an ‘improved spirit and help the club achieve progress and success’.
The report also says there’s an acknowledgement that Kane’s leadership will be a big miss, but they also believe having the leadership responsibilities spread across three stars could be better for the team.
Postecoglou has clearly warmed to Son since his arrival and during pre-season.
“I’m looking forward to working with him,” the Australian said. “He’s another one that I think shows real leadership qualities.
“I look at him and he’s pretty much a conduit for the whole squad. He mixes in all groups. I don’t think it’s just because he’s popular. What he’s done in the game he has a certain standing in the game.
“It’s good to see that influence on the group. He’s got a massive influence on the group which doesn’t surprise me because I know he’s a leader for his nation and he’s been an icon for his nation for a long time.
“He carries that really well for someone who has been in the spotlight for that long. He has enormous respect among the players.”
