Erik ten Hag has been given no assurances his job at Manchester United is safe – after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said the manager’s future is not his call.
Ten Hag’s job is on the line after a dismal start to the new season, which has seen United win just three of their opening 10 games in all competitions. United have failed to win any of their last four games and needed a 91st-minute equaliser from Harry Maguire to draw 3-3 in Porto on Thursday, having led 2-0.
Against that backdrop, Ten Hag knows he cannot afford to lose at Aston Villa on Sunday, if he is to be sure of keeping his job after the international break. United chief Ratcliffe will be at Villa Park for the crunch encounter but said any decision over Ten Hag’s future is out of his hands – suggesting the Dutchman could already be in trouble
Asked if he has faith in Ten Hag, Ratcliffe said: “I don’t want to answer that question…I like Erik. I think he’s a very good coach but at the end of the day it’s not my call, it’s the management team that’s running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.
