Nigeria ranked 14th among climate change-resilient African countries

Nigeria has been ranked 14th in terms of countries’ resilience to climate change in Africa.

According to a publication by Statista, a German online platform that specialises in data and information gathering, all 54 assessed nations in Africa scored below 40 out of a possible 100 index points, classifying them as lower resilient countries.

With an index score of 39.1, however, Mauritius emerged as the most climate change-resilient country in Africa. Morocco and South Africa are second and third on the list respectively, while Seychelles and Tunisia are fourth and fifth.

In order of their resilience and strict adherence to climate-related policies, Cape Verde, Egypt, Botswana, Algeria and Ghana made the list.

With an index score of 29.4, Nigeria was ranked 14th on the list, a step behind Libya and a step ahead of Djibouti.

For the Climate Resilience Index (CRI) factors like countries’ GDPs and vulnerability to climate change were taken into account. The report was published in August.

In descending order, Eritrea, Central African Republic and Chad are the least climate change-resilient countries in Africa.
