Pilot dies mid-flight, leading to emergency landing of passenger plane

A Turkish airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing after one of the pilots collapsed and died during the flight.

“The pilot of our Airbus 350… flight TK204 from Seattle to Istanbul collapsed during the flight,” airline spokesman Yahya Ustun wrote on X. “After an unsuccessful attempt to give first aid, the flight crew of another pilot and a co-pilot decided to make an emergency landing, but he died before landing.”

Türkiye Today named the deceased pilot as Captain Ilcehin Pehlivan. Attempts to revive the stricken pilot on the plane felt after he lost consciousness.

The flight had taken off from Seattle on Tuesday evening, but was forced to divert and land at New York’s JFK airport. The pilot, 59, passed a medical examination in March and there was no indication he had any serious health issues. He had worked for the airline since 2007.

It is not yet clear how many passengers were onboard at the time.

Ustun said: “We wish our captain eternal peace and patience for his grieving family, as well as all his colleagues and loved ones.”
