DAILY STAR

Russia has been accused of setting ablaze Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Images show giant plumes of smoke billowing from a chimney stack at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, situated in a Russian-held area of southeast Ukraine.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hit out at Vladimir Putin’s forces for targeting the site in spite of repeated warnings about its safety precautions. Having the Chernobyl disaster burnt into the memory of many Ukrainians, does little to alleviate fears.

Yevhen Yevtushenko, head of Ukraine’s Nikopol military administration, claims Russian troops set car tyres alight in the nuclear plant’s cooling towers to simulate a fire far more frightening, The Mirror reports

Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram: “The Russian occupiers started a fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Currently, the radiation indicators are normal. But as long as Russian terrorists retain control over the nuclear plant, the situation is not and cannot be normal.

“From the first day of the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Russia has been using it purely for blackmailing both Ukraine and the whole of Europe and the world.”
