In a recent interview with Arise TV, Sunday Oduntan, the Executive Director of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, disclosed that the Nigerian government is grappling with an outstanding electricity debt of approximately N100 billion. Oduntan emphasized the critical need for the government to create a conducive environment for energy distributors to thrive by fulfilling its financial obligations.
Highlighting the magnitude of the issue, Oduntan revealed that this debt encompasses various Ministries, Agencies, and Departments (MDAs). He pointed out that the recent scenario where the presidential villa settled its debt with the Abuja electricity distribution company could have been avoided if the government had been prompt in clearing its outstanding bills.
Expressing concern over the delayed payments, Oduntan urged all parties to fulfill their responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of timely payments to sustain the electricity sector. He noted that despite efforts to remind government entities of their outstanding bills, significant sums remain unpaid, totaling N100 billion.
The situation underscores the necessity for prompt action to address the mounting debt and ensure the stability of the electricity distribution system. As stakeholders continue to navigate these challenges, concerted efforts are essential to resolve outstanding debts and facilitate sustainable energy provision across the nation.”
