Numerous residences in the coastal and serene Okuoma community, located in the Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, were engulfed in flames hours after the tragic killing of 16 soldiers engaged in a peacekeeping mission.
According to a statement by the Director of Information at the Defence Headquarters, Tukur Gusau, the military personnel, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers, were slain by youths on Thursday.
“The troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, while on a peace mission to Okuoma community in BOMADI LGA of Delta State were surrounded by some community youths and killed on Thursday, 14 March 2024,” Gusau stated.
In response to the incident, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has ordered an immediate investigation.
A video shared by Channels Television showed thick black smoke emanating from various structures in the community, with flames visible in the distance.
Concerns about potential reprisal attacks from military personnel have prompted some residents to flee the area.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has strongly condemned the violence, vowing to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
