As preparations for the May 1, 2024 Workers’ Day gain momentum, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outlined seven key demands to be addressed by the Federal Government.
In addition to advocating for a new minimum wage, the NLC is calling for the establishment of state and local government police forces to combat the prevailing insecurity across the nation. The congress emphasized the importance of ensuring that states, local governments, and the organized private sector adhere to the new minimum wage once it receives approval.
International Workers’ Day, commonly referred to as Labour Day, is an annual observance held on May 1st, or the first Monday in May, to honor the contributions of the working class.
The upcoming 2024 Workers’ Day holds significant anticipation, as it is anticipated that President Bola Tinubu may unveil the proposed minimum wage for Nigerian workers on that occasion. Earlier discussions within organized labour suggested a tentative minimum wage of N615,000 per month.
A member of the National Executive Council of the Trade Union Congress, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that this decision was made prior to the recent increase in electricity tariffs by the Federal Government.
The source said, “We are going to have another round of serious conversations with the government. Mind you, the tariff increase is also very good for us, because they (the government) did it when the new minimum wage process had not been concluded. So, it is going to be a good ground for us to ask for more money.”
The N30,000 subsisting minimum wage expired three days ago, as its five-year lifespan ended on April 18.
