According to the Vanguard News report, the Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated talks with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) in an effort to obtain emergency supplies of oral cholera vaccines (OCV) to combat the ongoing cholera outbreak in Nigeria.
This move comes as the country grapples with a global shortage of cholera vaccines, which is expected to persist until at least 2025, according to GAVI.
In light of the urgent need for vaccines, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, has engaged in discussions with GAVI, a global health partnership that plays a crucial role in improving vaccine access in low-income countries.
As Nigeria seeks additional cholera vaccines, the World Health Organization has prequalified a new oral simplified vaccine, Euvichol-S, which has similar efficacy to existing vaccines. This development could provide much-needed support to countries like Nigeria as they fight against cholera.
