A bill to allow Nigerians living abroad to obtain the National Identity Number passed the second reading at the Senate on Tuesday.
The Nigerian Senate has proposed a bill that would allow Nigerians living abroad to obtain the National Identity Number (NIN), a move aimed at increasing inclusivity and access to government services for citizens outside the country.
Sponsored by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, the bill passed its second reading on Tuesday, bringing it one step closer to becoming law. The legislation seeks to repeal the National Identity Management Commission Act 2007, and if passed, would enable Nigerians in the diaspora to register for the NIN and enjoy the benefits it provides.
