Military troops deployed to protect farmers in Northern Nigeria amid food crisis

In response to increased attacks on farmers and rising food inflation, the Nigerian military has deployed troops across farms in the northern parts of the country, particularly in the North West and North Central regions. The military aims to protect farmers from bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements, enabling them to work without fear and ensuring a successful planting season towards a bumper harvest.

Over 332 farmers have been killed in Nigeria in the first quarter of this year, marking a significant increase from the same period last year, when at least 128 farmers lost their lives. A recent report by SBM Intelligence also revealed that farmers in the North paid an estimated sum of N139m as farm levies to bandits, who demanded at least N224m between 2020 and 2023.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun stated that the police had commenced patrols on farms to boost farmers’ confidence, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of farmers and addressing the growing hunger crisis in the country.

Maj Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the deployment of troops with the commencement of the rainy season but did not disclose the exact number of troops assigned to the farms. Buba added that the deployment would ensure a successful farming season and help Nigeria attain food security.

Kabir Ibrahim, Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, acknowledged the increased security presence on farms and commended the government for its efforts. However, he emphasized the need to eradicate insecurity to achieve food sufficiency.
