Chief of Defence Staff warns civilians harboring criminals, addresses Sokoto airstrike incident

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has warned civilians in Nigeria to desist from harboring suspected criminals, stressing that those who do so will face the consequences of their actions. The warning comes after a Christmas Day bombing in Sokoto State, where an airstrike, intended to target Lakurawa terrorists, accidentally hit the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, killing at least 10 people and injuring several others.

During his visit to the troops of Operation FASAN YANMA at the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, General Musa stated that civilians who harbor criminals like the Lakurawa terrorist group or bandits are making themselves legitimate targets. He urged the public to report such individuals and to avoid supporting or sheltering them.

“The military will not take it lightly with anyone enabling criminals,” Musa said. “If you harbor them, you make yourself a target.” He emphasized that the military was committed to addressing the nation’s security challenges and would continue operations to neutralize such threats.

Regarding the accidental airstrike, the CDS acknowledged the incident but defended the military’s actions, insisting that the attack followed thorough reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. He confirmed that the military had video evidence of the operation and pledged to investigate any possible errors. Musa also called for greater cooperation from neighboring countries such as Niger, Chad, and Benin in the fight against terrorism and criminal elements.

Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, along with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-governor Aminu Tambuwal, have called for an impartial investigation into the bombing. Governor Aliyu visited the affected communities, offering condolences to the victims’ families and announcing a N20 million donation and food supplies for the grieving families.

The CDS also commended the troops for their dedication and sacrifices in securing the country, particularly in Operation FASAN YANMA, and urged them to continue their efforts in 2025 to overcome security challenges.
