Orji Kalu applies for post-conviction bail ▷ Nigeria news

– Orji Ozor Kalu has spoken again from his prison cell

– This time, the former Abia state government is seeking post-conviction bail

– Kalu also lamented over his poor health condition with, according to him, cannot be catered for by the prison facility

A former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, who was recently sentenced to a 12-year jail term by a Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, December 17, applied for a post-conviction bail.

Kalu applied for the bail on the grounds that he is presently battling with his poor health which the prison facility cannot take care of.

The former cheif whip of the Senate also said that his constituency will suffer terrible setback if he remains in prison, The Nation reports.

However, Kalu’s bail application has been opposed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC).

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, the president of the Court of Appeal, has revealed how her court was able to avert delay that would have clogged proceedings in criminal cases including the recently concluded trial of Kalu.

Legit.ng gathered that he was part and parcel of the making of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) from inception, adding that she had also witnessed its implementation.

She had the chance to fully participate when applications were made by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Federal Ministry of Justice and other prosecuting bodies.

She said: “I was very much interested in what will come out of it. And, I had the chance to fully participate when applications were made by the EFCC, federal ministry of justice and other prosecuting bodies, that our justices, who were appointed from the high courts, and elevated to the court of appeal, be given fiats to go back to the various high courts and conclude the case they have started.”
