For Chelsea, Saturday night’s 1-0 Champions League final win over Manchester City is just the start. Thomas Tuchel wants his side to win the Premier League title next time out, admitting he won’t rest on his laurels. So Express Sport will now take a look at how the Blues could line up if they make three additions to their squad.
Goalkeeper: Mendy
At the current time of writing, Gianluigi Donnarumma is available on a free transfer.
Previously, Chelsea were interested in the AC Milan star – contemplating a move as recently as last summer.
But Tuchel doesn’t need, or want, a new goalkeeper. And that’s because of the way Edouard Mendy has flourished between the sticks this season.
The former Rennes star has flourished over at Stamford Bridge, righting the wrongs of the expensive Kepa Arrizabalaga deal nearly three years ago.
And with Chelsea happy with Mendy’s performances, they’re unlikely to pursue a new shot-stopper this term.
Defence: Azpilicueta, Marquinhos, Rudiger
It was telling that, after Chelsea’s win over City, Tuchel lauded Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger.
Both players were struggling during Frank Lampard’s time in charge but, since his sacking, have turned their Stamford Bridge careers around.
Thiago Silva started against Pep Guardiola’s team but, at the age of 36, is entering the twilight years of his career.
So, with that the case, Chelsea are eyeing a move for Silva’s old PSG team-mate Marquinhos.
And, if he joins, he’d be perfect to go alongside Rudiger and Azpilicueta at the back.
Midfield: Chilwell, Rice, Kante, James
Chelsea are back to considering Declan Rice, having failed to sign the West Ham star on Lampard’s watch 12 months ago.
With Jorginho still erratic at times, the England international would certainly be the perfect upgrade.
And the rest of Tuchel’s midfield picks itself.
Ben Chilwell and Reece James have both impressed in wing-back roles, while N’Golo Kante is back to his blockbuster best.
Chelsea only need minor tinkerings and they could act on Rice swiftly, especially with Manchester United also keen.
Forwards: Havertz, Haaland, Mount
Chelsea aren’t going to drop Kai Havertz. Not now he’s the hero of their Champions League triumph.
And it’s a similar story with Mason Mount, who has been fantastic ever since Lampard was ousted from the Stamford Bridge hot seat.
So, due to that, Timo Werner may soon find himself spending more time on the bench.
Chelsea have strong interest in Erling Haaland who, contrary to comments from Borussia Dortmund, will be available for a gargantuan fee this summer.
And Chelsea have the funds to bring the Norway international to the capital, in a move that would make Europe’s elite stand up and take note.
Tuchel: The effort was huge
Chelsea boss Tuchel hailed his side for a ‘strong effort’ against City.
He said: “I was so grateful to arrive here [in the final] a second time.
“It felt different. I told everybody that before. Somehow we could feel it every day coming closer but we were comfortable.
“We needed a top-level performance and we needed a strong bond just to have a chance to win this match.
“This is what we did and I am very happy to share this moment with this team and with all the staff, with all the guys who support on an everyday basis at Cobham. The team fights for them.
“The effort was huge.
“We overcome some difficult moments and some very dangerous moments with fantastic attitude to defending.
“We had to make an early change with Andreas Christensen coming on for Thiago Silva which did not make the things easier but we were brave. Even in moments where it was hard to escape the pressure we kept the formation and we were constantly active.”
