Derby fans hope to back a winner on flat racing’s biggest day

Adayar sprang a 16-1 surprise as he came home a wide-margin winner of the Epsom Derby under a jubilant Adam Kirby. 

The Sheikh-owned outlier was far from the bookies’ top pick to take home the sought-after title at the Epsom Downs racecourse in Surrey today.

Trained by Charlie Appleby – and only ridden by Kirby after he lost the ride on John Leeper to Frankie Dettori – the son of Frankel shot clear in the final furlong to give his handler a second win after Masar in 2018.   

The 4,000 fans attending today’s derby were keen to back a winner.
