Tokyo to implement GPS system to track Olympic athletes

Athletes and media attending the Tokyo Games could be subject to GPS monitoring in a bid to manage potential COVID-19 outbreaks.

Instead of tracking the real-time movements of athletes, however, it is understood the system will be used retroactively to trace retroactively trace athletes and members of the media, should issues arise.

The postponed Olympics will begin on July 23 amid concerns the influx could place pressure on Japan’s already strained medical system.
