Almost everything. Amazon’s own line of products will be heavily discounted—Echo speakers, Show smart displays, Kindle Ebook readers, and Fire tablets will all see their best prices. Small electronics like headphones, small kitchen appliances, baby gear, mobile accessories, networking gear, appliances like vacuum cleaners, personal care products, smart home and home security gear will all likely see discounts. In short, you can expect sales on nearly everything (though chip shortages may lead to fewer and less-dramatic sales on electronics than usual)—but here are the deals we think we’ll most likely see during the event.
Amazon Device Deals
Predictably, Amazon discounts its own products every Prime Day. Echo speakers, Kindle ebook readers, Show smart displays, and Fire tablets will all be discounted, as will a slate of Wirecutter picks from Amazon-owned brands like Ring Alarm, former Wirecutter pick Eero, and brands Amazon closely partners with, like Chamberlain. Here are the deals we expect to see come Prime Day.
Kindle Paperwhite. The Kindle Paperwhite 10th gen 8 GB will likely drop to $85 or less during Prime Day, beating deals at $95 right now. It’s an aging but still excellent eBook reader, and while there may be a new model around the corner, most improvements in recent years have been iterative, not game-changing.
Echo Show 5. A small screen smart display we like for nightstands, the 2019 Echo Show 5 fell as low as $45 during Prime Day 2020. We think we’ll see that pricing again for the older model, but a new, faster version with a better camera has been announced and will be released June 9. We think the new Show 5 will be discounted by at least $10 to $75, but there may be a wait to get it depending on demand.
Amazon Echo Dot (4th Gen). The Echo Dot (3rd gen) was a big hit with our readers during Prime Day 2020, and we expect its successor to do similarly well. The Dot (4th gen) will likely be discounted to $30 or less, and the 4th gen version with the integrated clock will likely go for no more than $40.
Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage Hub and Controller. We expect this updated model of the Chamberlain smart garage door controller to drop down to around $20. Chamberlain is an Amazon partner brand that works with Amazon’s Key service. The previous generation model of this opener saw prices as low as $17 during Prime Day, so $20 isn’t an unreasonable expectation.
Ring Alarm 8-Piece Kit. Expect deals on all Ring Alarm configurations, whether it’s the 5-piece, 8-piece, or 14-piece kit. We’d recommend looking out for bundles that include the Echo Dot, as those are typical during Prime Day. The Dot can be used to control these Amazon-owned smart home alarm systems with your voice, so they go surprisingly well together. We think the 8-piece with the bundled dot will be around $150, making our budget pick even more budget-friendly.
Stick vacuums, robot vacuums, and upright vacuums
If your vacuum sucks (and not in the good way), you’re in luck. Judging from last year’s sales, we expect to see nice deals on stick vacuums from Dyson and robot vacuums from Eufy, Roborock, and Roomba. Previously we’ve even spotted a few discounts on upright vacuums from Shark (including discounts on our top pick and our runner-up pick from the Navigator series).
TVs
Although we didn’t see a ton of deals on our best Wirecutter TV picks last year, we did see some discounts on the Samsung Frame series, a unique television featured in our article about designer TVs. We also spotted many deals on low-end televisions typical of Prime Day—we just didn’t see a ton of our budget picks included.
Wireless Bluetooth headphones and earbuds
Prime Day and Black Friday have always proven to be great times to buy headphones—and we expect that to be the case in 2021, too. (Ah, music to our ears.) Last year, we spotted great deals on Jabra’s line of wireless Bluetooth headphones and earbuds, including the Jabra Elite 85h and the Jabra Elite 75t. We also saw drops on Beats, Bose, and Sony pairs, along with excellent discounts that made our budget noise-cancelling headphones pick, the Anker Soundcore Life Q20, even more affordable.
Laptops
We expected to see a good portion of laptop deals from Best Buy’s Bigger Deal Sales Event; though there are a few discounted laptops available, we haven’t found any spectacular pricing on Wirecutter-recommended options. We still expect to see deals on some of our picks as the event continues, and we’ll keep an eye out for the best price drops. Best Buy carries most of our laptop and Chromebook picks, including laptop options from Apple and Lenovo and Chromebook options from HP, Lenovo, and Acer. We plan to keep an eye on the sale (which will also run concurrently to Prime Day). We expect to see deals on mid-range laptops direct from manufacturers like Lenovo this year as well.
