Trump vows to block Nigerians, others from U.S. birthright citizenship if reelected

PEOPLE’S GAZETTE

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to block Nigerians and other nationals, who are illegal immigrants, from getting citizenship for their children born in the United States. He vowed to take the measure on his first day in office if reelected in 2024.

“As part of my plan to secure the border, on day one of my new term in office, I will sign an executive order making clear to federal agencies that under the correct interpretation of the law, going forward, the future children of illegal aliens will not receive automatic U.S. citizenship,“ Mr Trump announced on Tuesday.

Mr Trump’s statement came on the 125th anniversary of the Supreme Court case (the United States v. Wong Kim Ark) that established the constitutional right to birthright citizenship.

In 2018, Mr Trump previously mooted the same idea as the president. The renewed proposal by the ex-U.S. president echoes a longtime demand of immigration restrictionists and a measure that he toyed with while in office. Mr Trump was reported by The Washington Post as describing Nigerians and other African nations as “shithole” countries.
