Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pledged to revitalize Italy’s relations with China during her first official visit to Beijing since assuming office. In a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Meloni signed a three-year action plan to bolster economic cooperation between the two countries, focusing on sectors such as electric vehicles and renewable energy. This move comes after Italy’s departure from China’s Belt and Road Initiative last year, citing a lack of tangible benefits.
Meloni emphasized that her five-day trip signifies a new phase in bilateral cooperation between Italy and China, demonstrating the willingness to explore innovative forms of collaboration. Premier Li Qiang also expressed support for increased cooperation in industries like shipbuilding, aerospace, new energy, and artificial intelligence, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Italy’s decision to strengthen ties with China may raise concerns among its Western allies, given the ongoing debate surrounding China’s human rights record and foreign policy. However, Meloni’s government seems committed to finding a balance between maintaining strong alliances with the West and fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with China.
