215,267 WAEC results withheld…malpractice concerns revealed

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, revealing a 73.79 per cent pass rate for candidates obtaining credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.

According to WAEC Head of Nigeria Office, Dr Amos Dangut, out of 1,805,216 candidates in Nigeria, 72.12 per cent (1,301,941) obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

However, Dangut announced that results of 215,267 candidates (11.92 per cent) were withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. This number shows a 4.37 per cent decrease from the 16.29 per cent recorded in the 2023 WASSCE for school candidates.

Dangut emphasized the persistent issues of cell phone usage in examination halls and organized cheating in some schools. The council is investigating these cases, with outcomes to be presented for consideration and final decisions. Affected candidates can request redress via the WAEC website.

Of Nigerian candidates, 93.39 per cent (1,685,889) received fully processed and released results, while 6.61 per cent (119,327) have subjects still being processed due to unresolved issues.

Examinations took place across Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia from April 30 to June 24, 2024. Out of the total candidates in Nigeria, 49.68 per cent (896,894) were males, and 50.32 per cent (908,322) were females.
