Months of blackout expected in Rivers and Bayelsa after vandals destroyed 13 TCN towers

Some communities in Rivers and Bayelsa states are set to face a prolonged blackout following the destruction of thirteen Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuits.

In a statement released by Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs for TCN, the company has raised alarm over the increasing rate of vandalism of its installations and called for the support of the Rivers and Bayelsa state governments to address the issue.

This recent incident comes as a major blow to the company’s efforts to restore power supply in the region. Vandals had previously targeted the same Ahoada-Yenagoa transmission line, prompting TCN to award a contract for the reinforcement of towers 19-31, which had been vandalized and had critical components stolen.

The thirteen vandalized towers span various communities in both Rivers and Bayelsa states, including Okobe, Emezhi 1, Mbiama, and Igbogene. Given the scale of the destruction and the ongoing work on previously damaged towers, TCN estimates that it may take several months to complete the reconstruction and stringing of the affected towers.
