The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, has made serious allegations of financial misconduct against several high-profile individuals, including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The accusations, which involve the alleged misappropriation of campaign funds, have sent shockwaves through Nigerian political circles.
Key Allegations
During a press conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, called on the National Security Adviser and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate:
- Aisha Yesufu and Pastor Itua Ighodalo, accused of mismanaging over N12 billion and $15 million in campaign donations.
- Peter Obi, described as a “political merchant,” allegedly directing the misappropriation of funds.
- Afenifere leaders, including Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Akin Osuntokun, and Sola Ebiseni, accused of retaining over N600 million in private accounts linked to Afenifere.
Arabambi stated, “Peter Obi allegedly hired Aisha Yesufu, Pastor Itua Ighodalo, and this faction of Afenifere to commit looting, criminal conspiracy, and diversion of funds from the Labour Party’s presidential campaign while presenting themselves as elder statesmen.”
Responses to Allegations
The accusations have been met with strong denials:
- Dr. Yunisa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, described the allegations as “baseless and false.” He stated, “I was present when Aisha Yesufu provided the audited account of the presidential campaign fund, and the truth is that no money is missing from the Labour Party’s accounts.”
- Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Deputy Leader of Afenifere, said he was not familiar with the allegations but indicated that Afenifere would respond if necessary.
Call for Investigation
The Labour Party NWC has urged a thorough investigation into all bank accounts associated with the alleged misconduct, emphasizing the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
