Gunmen suspected to be rival cultists killed four and wounded 15 during a burial ceremony in Anambra’s Ogidi community, prompting a police investigation

Four people were killed and about 15 injured when gunmen suspected to be cultists attacked a burial ceremony in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday night. Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to be from a rival cult group, stormed the compound on motorcycles and opened fire while family members performed burial rites. “The assailants suddenly invaded the scene of the burial on Thursday and opened fire at the gathering,” a resident told PUNCH Online.

Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the attack, noting that operatives swiftly restored order and evacuated victims to hospitals. “Following a distress call… armed men suspected to be cultists invaded a burial ceremony… resulting in the death of four persons while 15 others sustained serious injuries,” he stated. Sixteen expended cartridges were recovered.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu condemned the killings and ordered a discreet investigation, assuring residents of intensified efforts to curb cult-related violence.
