Ghana’s Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams, has announced the formation of an investigative committee to probe the death of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a fight in Accra. Speaking on Sporty FM, Adams assured that “nothing will be covered” as authorities seek answers.
Olanrewaju, a former West African light-heavyweight champion, died on March 29 after slumping in the third round of his bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Bukom Boxing Arena. He was pronounced dead at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Remi Aboderin, secretary-general of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), accused Ghanaian authorities of negligence, claiming they failed to follow boxing regulations.
Adams urged full cooperation from Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities, stating, “We need to institute a committee to look into what happened. If all sides cooperate, we will get to the truth.”
