Hajj commission mismanaged N90bn subsidy – Reps probe reveals

A House of Representatives ad hoc committee has indicted the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for multiple infractions in the 2024 Hajj exercise. The committee, chaired by Sada Soli (Jibia/Kaita, Katsina), submitted its report to the House, detailing operational failures and recommending reforms to prevent future issues. The probe followed a motion by Omar Bio (Buruten/Kaima, Kwara), citing concerns over NAHCON’s management amid a N90bn government subsidy for the pilgrimage.

State governors and critics had earlier criticized NAHCON for poor accommodation arrangements and insufficient travel allowances for pilgrims. The subsidy, approved by the Tinubu administration, had sparked public backlash, with many arguing the funds should have been channeled toward pressing national challenges. The committee’s findings now pave the way for potential overhauls in Hajj operations.
