Daily cases of coronavirus smash records in U.S. after Biden promised to ‘shut down the virus’

The U.S. set a new record for the number of daily coronavirus cases recorded in the country, which comes nearly a year into Democrat President Joe Biden’s first year into office.

“The U.S. logged its highest single-day total of new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, with 441,278 infections surpassing the previous daily record by close to 150,000,” Politico reported. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s tally represents a grim new milestone in the coronavirus pandemic and comes as the Omicron strain has quickly taken hold throughout the U.S., leading to long lines at testing sites and sold-out rapid tests at many stores.”

The news comes after Biden repeatedly pledged while on the campaign trail that he would “shut down the virus.” More Americans have now died on Biden’s watch than died under former President Donald Trump.

A CDC spokesperson told Politico that the case total could be an “overestimate” due to lagging state reporting and that “the counts of cases will become more stable after the new year.”

The New York Times reported that on Monday the U.S. recorded 543,415 new coronavirus cases. CNN reported that “the U.S. hit a seven-day average of 254,496 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins University data — blowing past the country’s previous record of about 251,989 daily cases, reported on January 11.”

Amid plummeting approval ratings, Biden told governors on Monday that there was “no federal solution” and that challenges combatting the coronavirus pandemic “gets solved at the state level.”
