▪ Peter Obi, Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, criticized the manner of arrest of the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure.
▪ Obi expressed dissatisfaction with the televised arrest, stating it could have been handled better to uphold democratic principles.
▪ He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and responding to invitations from constituted authorities, but condemned the distressing image of Abure lying on the ground during the arrest.
▪ Obi described the arrest as deplorable and called for condemnation and active addressal of such actions to uphold justice and respect in society.
▪ He emphasized the need for officers to adhere to due process and established arrest procedures, showing civility, respect for citizens’ rights, and presumption of innocence.
▪ Abure and other LP members arrested in Benin City have been released.
▪ The police stated that Abure was arrested over a petition related to attempted murder and conspiracy to commit dangerous harm, denying any assault during the arrest but mentioning an altercation with individuals trying to prevent it.
