VCs’ panel proposes N80,000 electricity charge for university students

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities has said university students may likely be charged N80,000 or more to cover the high electricity tariffs.

As Nigeria’s universities grapple with skyrocketing electricity costs, the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has warned that students may soon face a staggering N80,000 electricity fee – a substantial increase that could further strain the already burdened higher education system.

Professor Yakubu Ochefu, Secretary-General of the CVCNU, revealed in an interview that universities are struggling to keep pace with the massive costs, as monthly electricity charges have ballooned to over N200 million – more than triple the previous cost under the Band A system. This alarming surge has been attributed to a 300% increase in electricity tariffs imposed on Band A customers, who receive at least 20 hours of electricity supply per day.

Many universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Benin, and Babcock University, have reported receiving electricity bills as high as N300 million per month. This unprecedented burden has raised questions about the affordability and sustainability of higher education in Nigeria, with the CVCNU claiming that universities simply cannot bear the crippling costs without passing them on to students.
