The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended several suspects for alleged vote buying during the ongoing Edo State governorship election. The arrests took place around 10 am in Egor Local Government Area, with EFCC and police operatives detaining three suspects – two males and one female – at a polling unit before taking them into custody.

Prior to the election, civil society organization Yiaga Africa had identified Egor LGA as one of eight potential hotspots for violence and vote buying, alongside Ovia South-West, Ovia North-East, Oredo, Ikpoba Okha, Etsako West, Etsako East, and Esan South-East.

The EFCC had previously stated its commitment to ensuring electoral integrity by monitoring the election and preventing financial inducement of voters. Spokesperson Dele Oyewale reaffirmed this stance, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to democratic principles and the rule of law.
